This is a Man's World (But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl)

Leave it up to Miuccia Prada to bring the sexy back into fashion. To do that, she had to bring a man's eye to women's fashion.

Women and cars, with a healthy dose of 1950s nostalgia, serve as inspiration for the latest spring collection. But I would argue that the collection is really designed for the men who drive those cars and the women who dress for the men.

In a season of demure hemlines and delicate florals, Prada counters with bandeau tops, pencil skirts, and bright pops of crimson. She even goes so far as to turn the women into cars, with tailpipe fire shoes, colors reminiscent of auto-paint, and prints that seem branded by"spray-painting mechanic boyfriends".

The gaze of the invisible man has been expertly translated by a 62 year old woman. In a way, this is a collection about how a woman thinks a man thinks a woman should dress. I love these collages (although she stole my idea) as a way to see the 1950s from Miuccia's perspective translated into the collection.

When Pin-Ups went Bombshell

There was a point in the 1950s when the girls went from pin-ups to bombshells. Perhaps it was the publication of the Kinsey reports, when sex went from a cultural pariah to the topic of dinner conversations across the country. Maybe it was the advent of Rock n'Roll and that infamous hip shake of one Sir Elvis Presley. Or maybe it was the perfect storm of the bullet bra, peroxide bleach, wiggle dresses, and cat eye makeup that came together into one killer combination. But let's give credit where credit is due,  to the ladies who defined the bombshell look. Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russel, Jayne Mansfield, we salute you.

Dog Days of Summer

Like most of New York, I fled the dog days of summer (and an earthquake and hurricane), and fled the city. I headed for that little place between mountain and sea called Portland, OR. One gorgeous afternoon, we headed to my cousin's houseboat on the Willamette River. Life can't get more pleasant than that.

The Stepford Wives of Ikea

I moved last week to a beautiful apartment. But after years of living in college housing, bouncing between coasts, and living at my parent's place I didn't have a single piece of furniture. So off to Ikea it was! That Swedish wonderhouse of cheap furniture just begged for a photoshoot, so I obliged. Betty Draper eat your heart out.
